Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak has offered a new plan that would allow Palestinian refugees to decide on resettlement. The refugees could choose any one of several locations including Israel. The plan has been proposed by Justice Minister Yossi Beilin, who is regarded as close to Barak. The Beilin proposal was submitted to the Palestinian negotiators, who are said to have expressed interest. Under the plan, millions of Palestinian refugees will be given a choice of several options. This includes relocating in a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza Strip, settling in Arab countries or in the West, or living in Israel. The choice by each refugee must be approved by an international body that will be created to deal with resettlement. Israel will announce the number of refugees it is willing to resettle. END |
