Five oil flow stations with a combined production capacity of 250,000 barrels of crude oil have been shut down at Batan, Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State by youths from the area. The flow stations are operated by Shell. Also shut down by the youths, were the operators of oil servicing companies working on the Associated Gas Gathering Project (AGGP). In a communique shortly after the flow stations were seized, the seven core host communities accused Shell of favouring relations of its employees at the expense of the indigenes of the host communities who, according to them bear the brunt of oil production activities. The host communities which are mainly Ijaw are therefore demanding employment opportunities for indigenes and gas turbine electrification of the seven core host communities. Others are provision of funds for capital projects, presentation of the environmental impact assessment by Shell on the Odidi 9 AGG project to the core communities, reclamation project for socio-economic development, implementation of the award of overseas scholarship to seven indigenes, Shell should make public its employment quota nationwide, especially the positions occupied by the Ijaw, and automatic registration of indigenous companies from the seven core host communities by SPDC.
