On February 28 2001 at 21.30 West Indonesia Time, the town of Idi Rayeuk was taken and came under the control of AGAM (Free Aceh Movement's military wing). During the 14 hour occupation, the guerillas burnt down all Police barracks in the town as well the empty jail house. They also bombed the police station. At 9,30 on March 1, 2000, the heavily reinforced Indonesian security forces (using armored cars and 3 helicopters) retook the town. Upon re-entering the town they burnt it down and then proceeded to torch several villages around it. Fleeing civilians were shot at and those captured were tortured. The following are the names of the villages that were burnt down: Calok Geulima Keude Acheh Kampong Acheh Kampong Blang Pulo Blang Kampong Jawa Thousands of able bodied civilians from the town and villagers have fled to the mountains, and those who have the means have gone to sea, leaving behind the elderly, children and women. The situation at Idi Rayeuk town is very tense. The town folk are very fearful of rumors that AGAM is going to attempt to take the town again.
