The information provided by Novaya Gazeta observer Anna Politkovskaya (who asserted that there is a filtration camp near the village of Khatuni in the Vedeno region of Chechnya, where the 45th paratrooper's regiment is stationed - agency add) can be proved or disproved only after it has been thoroughly checked, the presidential human rights envoy to Chechnya, Vladimir Kalamanov, told Interfax on Monday [26 February]. He said that checking the information provided by Politkovskaya is one of the two purposes of his trip to Chechnya, where he is going on Tuesday. Kalamanov said he hopes he will be provided with access to the military units, which he is planning to check. He is also planning to involve employees of the commandant's office, employees of the military-prosecutor's office, and representatives of the public in this operation. Kalamanov said that by the end of the week it will be possible to expect the results of the operation aimed at checking the information provided by Politkovskaya. Kalamanov said he would inform Russian President Vladimir Putin of the results. The second purpose of his trip to the Chechen Republic is to accompany the Council of Europe's commissioner for human rights, Alvaro Gil-Rovles, who arrived in Moscow on Monday, on his trip to Chechnya. Kalamanov said the Council of Europe human rights commissioner is planning to visit Groznyy and Gudermes, and is also planning to familiarize himself with the work being done by the office of the Russian president's human rights envoy to Chechnya in the village of Znamenskoye.
