TITLE: Israeli Military Heavily Shells Gaza Strip All Day Today

DATE: May 10, 2001

At around 3.30 pm this afternoon, Israeli forces fired land-to-land rockets on Gaza City, targeting the Fatah headquarters, the Ministry of Transport and the Central Prison. The targeted buildings and surrounding houses were severely damaged in the attack, which was directed from an Israeli air force helicopter overhead. 10 Palestinians were reported wounded in the incident, all of them civilians with light - medium injuries. Elsewhere in the Gaza Strip, at around midday Israelis tanks shelled the Palestinian National Security Force offices east of Qarara, east Khan Younis, completely demolishing the offices and moderately injuring four National Security officers in the process. Military reinforcements have been taking place throughout the day around al-Qarara area and Yibna refugee camp in Rafah, following an Israeli military raid and severe shelling on the area at dawn. Bulldozing activities accompanied the raid.

The shelling is said to have been triggered by the death of two people and injury of one other when a mine exploded in a nearby settlement. However, there are conflicting reports as to whether those killed and injured were Romanian immigrant workers or Israeli soldiers, and the source of the mine is also unclear. In another incident, at 3 pm this afternoon in Rafah, Israeli soldiers posted on the Egyptian border shelled residential areas and civilian houses near Salah Al Deen Gate, Tel Al Zu'rob, Rafah Refugee Camp and Brazil quarter, causing severe structural damage to buildings and injuring 11 Palestinians, one critically. The fighting has yet to end at the time of release, 8 pm Thursday 10 May.
